Effective September 17, 2026
This policy covers dui.guru: the free case analysis form, the DUI tools, the client intake form and the live chat. It says what this site collects when you use them, what we may do with it, and who else sees it.
YouTube API Services
This site and the applications behind it use YouTube API Services to publish and manage videos on our own YouTube channel. If you use a feature that relies on those services, you agree to the YouTube Terms of Service, and the information involved is also covered by the Google Privacy Policy.
That use is limited to uploading, updating and managing videos on the channel we own. We don't use these services to collect, access or store personal information about site visitors or viewers, and we don't sell or transfer any such data. The only credentials kept are the authorization tokens that let our own application publish to our own channel. They are stored securely on our server and not shared.
You can review what the application is allowed to access, and revoke that access at any time, on Google's security settings page at https://myaccount.google.com/permissions. For questions about our use of YouTube API Services, or to ask for deletion of related data, contact us using the details below.
Information you give us
Case analysis form and DUI tools. Your name, email address and phone number, plus your answers about the arrest: things like the county, the arrest date, the breath or blood result and the kind of license you hold. The two checkboxes at the bottom record whether you want a text and whether you want a call.
Client intake form. This one is for people who have already hired us, and it is much longer. It covers the arrest in detail, your driving and criminal history, and what you had to drink and when. You can also upload documents and photos. While you fill it out, your browser saves a draft on your own device so a closed tab doesn't cost you an hour of typing. The draft is erased when you submit.
Live chat, email, texts and calls. Whatever you write or say to us, and a log of the calls.
Please don't put anything in a form or a chat window that you wouldn't want a law office and the companies it works with to read. Sending us information through this site does not create an attorney-client relationship. Only a signed written agreement does that.
Information collected automatically
The web server logs each request: IP address, browser type, the page asked for, the page you came from and the time. Those logs are deleted after 14 days.
When you submit a form, your IP address is stored with the submission. We use it to catch spam.
If you arrive from an ad or a tagged link, the site notes the campaign codes in the address (the utm values, and the click references Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI and Reddit add to their ads) along with the page you landed on and the site that sent you. That note lives in your browser's session storage, which empties when you close the tab. If you send a form before then, the note goes with it, so we can tell which ad or website brought the inquiry in.
Library articles keep a simple view counter so the most-read ones can be listed first. It records the article, not the reader.
Analytics and advertising tools
These may run on the site:
- Google Analytics, which counts visits and shows how people move through the site.
- Google Ads, which tells us when an ad click leads to a form or a tap on the phone number.
- The Meta Pixel (Facebook and Instagram), which records page views and form submissions.
- OpenAI's ads pixel, which records page views, form submissions and phone taps for ads shown in ChatGPT.
Each of these companies sets cookies or similar identifiers, and each is able to link your visit here with other activity it sees, under its own privacy policy. You can limit that. Block third-party cookies in your browser, change your ad settings at Google and Meta, or install Google's Analytics opt-out add-on.
The site does not currently respond to browser "Do Not Track" signals.
How we use your information
- To answer your inquiry, write your free case analysis and email it to you.
- To call or text you, if you allowed it, and to send a short series of follow-up emails.
- To decide whether we can take your case or should point you to another attorney.
- To represent you, if you hire us.
- To see which ads and pages bring in inquiries, and to improve the site.
- To block spam and abuse, and to meet our legal and professional obligations.
The written case analysis and some of the emails that follow are drafted by software. Your form answers are sent to Anthropic, whose Claude model writes the draft from them.
Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal information.
Some companies handle it because we use their services:
- Oracle Cloud is where the servers and the database are hosted.
- Google carries our email, stores encrypted backups in Google Drive, and runs the Analytics and Ads tools above.
- Anthropic drafts case analyses and emails, as described above.
- Twilio and voip.ms are the carriers for phone calls and text messages.
- tawk.to runs the live chat.
- Meta and OpenAI receive the advertising measurements above. When someone who came from an OpenAI ad hires us, we tell OpenAI so it can match that result to the ad. What we send is the ad's click reference and a one-way scrambled (hashed) copy of the email address, never the address itself.
- If a person who came from a Google ad later hires Joel Brand, Esq., we report that to Google Ads using only the click identifier Google attached to the ad. We do not send Google a name, email address, or phone number in that report.
We will also disclose information when the law requires it, for example under a valid court order, subject to our duties of confidentiality under the rules for attorneys.
Text messages
Reply STOP to any automated text and the texts end. Every automated email has an unsubscribe link that does the same for email. Either one also ends the follow-up series.
How long we keep it
Inquiry records stay on file so we can check for conflicts of interest and answer questions that come up later. They aren't deleted on a fixed schedule, but you can ask us to delete yours, and we will unless a legal or ethical rule requires us to keep it. Client files are kept as long as the rules for attorneys require.
Server logs go after 14 days. The session note about ad clicks is gone when you close the tab. Encrypted backups are made every day, so a record deleted from the live system can survive in older backups for a while longer.
Security
Access to the servers is restricted. Backups are encrypted before they leave the server, and uploaded intake files sit behind a password-protected login. No system is perfectly secure, though, and ordinary email and text messages aren't encrypted end to end.
Your choices
You can ask us what information we have about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. You can also ask who we've shared it with. Email us at the address below. We'll confirm the request comes from you by checking it against the contact details already on file, and asking won't change how we handle your case.
California residents have one more right worth naming. Under Civil Code section 1798.83, the "Shine the Light" law, you can ask whether a business shared your information with others for their direct marketing.
Children
This site is meant for adults and is not directed to children under 13. If a parent is helping a minor with a DUI matter, the parent should be the one who contacts us.
Other websites and embedded videos
Some pages link to other sites or show embedded YouTube videos. A video player loaded from YouTube behaves as if you had visited YouTube itself, and Google's policies apply to it. Links to social media profiles take you to sites with their own privacy practices.
Changes to this policy
When the policy changes, the new version goes on this page with a new effective date at the top.
